Correcting Past Mistake - Fatty Crab

We used to go to this restaurant called Fatty Crab in Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya way back from 1995. They later opened up a branch at the Mines Resort City. About two years ago, a close friend told me that he used to play snooker with the owner's son who said that the food there is not halal  for Muslims as it contains pork fat (lard). Given that I knew this friend for over 20 years, I told my family and friends whom I used to take for dinner there, and has since never had a meal there.

The signature dish served there was the Chilly Crab which my family  and I missed. Recently, my wife asked around and there were a lot of confusion on the halal-ness of food served at Fatty Crab in Taman Megah. So she called the restaurant herself (+603-78045758) and she was informed that (a) they are pork-free, (b) they say they are non-halal because they serve beer, (c) its expensive to get JAKIM's halal certification, (d) the chicken wings were sourced from Ayamas i.e. halal, and (e) they use Knife brand cooking oil i.e. halal.

Since were were missing the Chilly Crab, we made our way there today. Arrived at 5.30 pm as they opened for dinner and promptly ordered Chilly Crab, Garlic Prawns, Fried Rice and Chicken Wings. Best of all we also ordered two portions of toasted bread to mop up the Chilly Crab sauce.  As I went to the counter to pay, one of the waitresses still remembered my wife. We told her why we have not come and she was shocked to hear that.

Sadly, the main man - the Usher who determined who gets seated and don't  - had passed away since. If you arrive after 6:45pm, be ready to queue outside for up to 30 minutes to 1 hour. The restaurant has kindly placed plastic chairs along the pavement for people to wait their turn. The Usher acted as a headmaster who kept tabs of who arrived first, second and matched groups to empty tables.

Coming back to the title of this blog. I will now spead the word about Fatty Crab to correct my earlier statement. My venerable teacher once said that if we utter a falsehood, we are under a duty bound to correct it. As long as people still believe in that original falsehood, we will bear the sin for it. So, to set the record straight - Fatty Crab's food is pork-free.

So go forth and enjoy the food. The original restaurant is located at No. 2, Jalan SS24/13, Taman Megah, 47301 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, open from 1730 hrs to 2330 hrs everyday, except Mondays when they close. The branch at No. 5, Jalan Tasik, The Mines Resort City, 43300 Sri Kembangan is closed on Tuesdays.

  1. Yes it's pork free but it doesn't mean that it's halal. If its halal why they did not published the HALAL cert from JAKIM. I used to eat there before too but when it's come to HALAL concerned not anymore.

  2. You fool! They sell beer, so don't expect any cert from Jakim. The same goes for Ikea's meatballs. As if having a cert will justify everything.

  3. Thanks for the review. And yes as a muslim i do worry abt halal n haraam but jakim cert is not the only way to show halal-ness. So many restaurants dont owe jakim cert but thy get their meet frm halal source and dont use lard. Thats halal enough. As long as u dont consume the alcohol, nothing to worry.

  5. So basically I guess you have not dine at any 5 hotels (as all serve alcohol), or eat at TGIF, Chillies, Tony Roma, Buba Shrimp, or any Japanese Restaurants or have ever eaten in restaurants when travelling abroad. I guess you also do not purchase items from 7-E, or any non-bumi run grocery stores.

Come on, what you are promoting is not halalness but a racist ideology that all Chinese are out to get Muslims to sin!

Pls be sane about this and think for a moment. The business owner is there to do business and he will do what ever it takes to make as many customers happy. But they still have to serve beer as their original target customers are Chinese and non-Muslims.

They menu consist of only a handful of items and only 1-2 cooking style.

Thus why they don't use 1. Lard, 2. Alcohol, in their cooking.

The only type of crab served is the Nipah species, which to my understanding is halal.

And the only meat served is chicken and beef for their satay and Chicken wings which they sourced from Ayam Mas.

They only alcohol served is beer in bottles and they do use beer mugs to serve it and use plastic cups to serve soft drinks and their famous air tebu.

But seriously, they didn't do it for the Muslims, as they have been serving the same menu for the last 50+ years (since the 60s- 2nd generations running the business now)
